Most tourists like Villoondi Theertham since it’s one of those visually striking beaches in Rameswaram with a quaint, endearing feel to it. It is also one of Rameswaram’s 64 Theerthas, or hallowed water bodies.
The distance between Villoondi Theertham and the Rameswaram main bus station is roughly 6 km. The location is well-known for its pure water spring inside the sea in addition to its breathtaking vistas and calm tides. This fresh water well beside the sea, just a short distance from the shore, is quite amazing. Its existence is linked by devotees to a mythical story found in the epic Ramayana. Following Goddess Sita’s rescue and return to Rameswaram from Sri Lanka, Lord Rama installed a Shiva linga on the area as part of ceremonial rites. Rama threw an arrow into the sea when Sita expressed her thirst, and pure water flowed from the spring. There is a Shiva shrine next to Villoondi Theertham, and the Shiva lingam is known as Thryambakeshvarar.
